<ABSTRACT>

 This paper will argue that a cooperation is necessary between the fields of humanities contents and traditional humanities in exploring the potential of digital humanities.

 Digital humanities refers to all new types of humanities research, education, and creative projects enabled by information technology. The definition is not limited to studies of traditional humanities topics using information technology as a research method; but it also includes completely new forms of humanities research realized by the use of computers.

 Digital humanities can be beneficial to both humanities and cultural contents. For the traditional humanities studies, digital humanities will contribute to a wide dissemination of humanities knowledge in society; for cultural contents, digital humanities will provide the most efficient medium to acquire humanities knowledge for application in the cultural industry.

 In order for the cultural contents to contain digital humanities, I suggest that education programs of the cultural contents departments should train some of their students in information technology to raise them as humanities knowledge coordinators. These coordinators should be equipped with not only the basic humanities knowledge, but also the information-processing skills to systemize the knowledge into digital contents. In case of Korea, where there is a shortage of professionals in the field of digital humanities, it is difficult for colleges to independently run digital humanities programs. But with open educational opportunities such as Digital Humanities Conference, it will be possible with just a few human resources to distribute knowledge and ideas to a large audience.

(Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities)을 통해서 전통 인문학자들을 대상으로 디지털인문학 방법론을 교육하고 전파할 수 있도록 지원하고 있다.

<ABSTRACT>

This paper aims to survey the current research trends of digital humanities in the United States in order to lay the groundwork for the development of digital humanities in Korea. In particular, this survey is mainly focused on the various projects supported by the Office of Digital Humanities (ODH) of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

The grant programs offered by the NEH include the Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants, which support the initial stages of planning digital humanities researches, as well as the Digital Humanities Implementation Grants, which are involved with the actual implementation of research projects. Also, the Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities is designed to support training programs for humanities scholars to enhance their understanding on digital humanities methodologies. The Digging Into Data Challenge seeks for a new research method to use big data that has been established through diverse digitalization projects, and the NEH/DFG Bilateral Digital Humanities Program displays exemplary international cooperation models for humanities research.

The most fundamental implications of the NEH’s Digital Humanities Project are as follows: First, the main actors of the researches should be humanities scholars whose academic bases are on the traditional humanities disciplines. Second, a certain kind of training programs are required to transform these scholars into “digital humanities scholars,” since they are not familiar with the methodology related to information & communication technologies. For this reason, the development and operation of such training programs are recognized as important projects and properly supported during the initial phases for promoting digital humanities.

In Korea, along with digital humanities, “cultural content” studies have been emerged as a result of methodological convergence between humanities and information & communication technologies. Cultural content studies in Korea succeeded in achieving positive outcomes in terms of industrial application of humanities studies. However, unlike the United States, this approaches turned out to be insufficient for providing solid foundation for humanities studies and innovating relevant research methodologies. It is expected that Korean humanities researchers will discover a mutual, complementary progress both for the traditional humanities disciplines and the applied humanities contributing to creative industries through a comprehensive understanding and analysis on the current research trends of digital humanities of the world.

<ABSTRACT>

  Digital humanities is an integrated discipline that has been emerged as a result of disciplinary convergence between traditional humanities and information technology. This new academic discipline is currently considered as the future of humanities, especially in the recent situation where the “crisis of humanities” prevails all over the world. In Korea, the alternative to pass through the humanities crisis was presented under the title of “cultural contents,” producing a large number of significant achievements in terms of commercializing the research results. However, these achievements are expected to be further improved and expanded by incorporating diverse efforts made in digital humanities, which focuses on the development of new methodologies for humanities studies. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the national policies for and current research trend of digital humanities, in particular in the United States, Taiwan, Japan, and China, so as to establish a solid foundation for development and dissemination of digital humanities in Korea.

  In the United States, as the academic circles continuously tried to develop the concept of digital humanities with the positive support from the national government, the scope of digital humanities projects has been expanded towards data mining, data analysis, and new digital forms of education. The Taiwanese government provides substantial support through various national policies for developing digital humanities, and the country, as a result, has emerged as the leader of digital humanities in Asia. Although only receiving minimal governmental support, the Japanese academia adopts the US and European digital humanities methodologies to integrate them into their own ways. Digital humanities researches in China concentrate on digitalizing sources, and thus are still in the rather early stages.

Finally, in the appendix, the paper includes a brief overview of the major digital humanities monographs and projects overseas, as a basis of analysis for providing a foundation for digital humanities in Korea.
