이 글은 미국 디지털인문학의 실상에 대한 이해를 높이고, 향후 우리나라의 디지털인문학 육성 시책 개발에 참고가 되게 하려는 목적에서,  미국 인문학재단이 디지털인문학 진흥을 위하여 수행하고 있는 지원 프로그램 및 이를 통해 수행되고 있는 디지털인문학 연구 프로젝트의 실제 내용을 조사, 분석, 정리한 것이다. 

미국 인문학재단(NEH)의 디지털인문학단(ODH, Office of Digital Humanities)에서 지원하는 디지털인문학 프로젝트의 유형은 5가지이다. 그 첫 번째인 ‘디지털인문학 초기 조성 지원금’(Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants)은 디지털인문학의 경험이 없는 순수 인문학자들이 디지털 기술을 활용하여 새로운 연구를 시도할 수 있도록 하는 지원금이다. 본격적으로 디지털인문학 연구의 수행이 가능해지면, ‘디지털인문학 실행 지원금’(Digital Humanities Implementation Grants)을 통해서 실제적인 프로젝트를 수행하도록 하고 있다. 또한 ‘디지털인문학 전문가 양성 프로그램 지원금’(Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities)을 통해서 전통 인문학자들을 대상으로 디지털인문학 방법론을 교육하고 전파할 수 있도록 지원하고 있다.  ‘인문학 빅데이터 분석 과제’(Digging Into Data Challenge)는 다양한 분야에서 축적된 빅데이터를 인문학적으로 활용하는 방안을 모색 하고 있으며, 독일의 연구진흥협회(DFG)와 공동으로 미·독 양국의 협력 연구팀을 선발·지원하는 ‘NEH/DFG 디지털인문학 협력 프로그램’(NEH/DFG Bilateral Digital Humanities Program)은 디지털인문학 분야에서의 국제 협력 모델을 제시하고 있다. 

현재까지 NEH의 지원을 받아 수행되는 디지털인문학 프로젝트는 전통적인 인문학에서 다루어 오던 연구 주제를 디지털 시대에 디지털 기술의 도움을 받아 수행함으로써 새로운 성과를 도출하려는 시도가 주류를 이룬다. 중요한 시사점은 이러한 프로젝트 기획 및 수행의 전 과정이 인문학 연구자들의 주도로 이루어지며, 디지털 기술의 이해와 운용 또한 인문학자들 스스로 담당해야 할 과제로 인식하고 있다는 점이다. 또한 개인 연구보다는 공동 연구를 지향하며, 디지털 기술을 바탕으로 연구 소통을 강조하여 연구 과정에서의 학제 간 공동연구 방법이나 연구 결과의 완전 공개를 강력하게 요구하고 있는 것도 NEH 디지털인문학 육성 프로그램에서 의미 있게 짚어보아야 할 사항들이다.

<ABSTRACT>

This paper aims to survey the current research trends of digital humanities in the United States in order to lay the groundwork for the development of digital humanities in Korea. In particular, this survey is mainly focused on the various projects supported by the Office of Digital Humanities (ODH) of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

The grant programs offered by the NEH include the Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants, which support the initial stages of planning digital humanities researches, as well as the Digital Humanities Implementation Grants, which are involved with the actual implementation of research projects. Also, the Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities is designed to support training programs for humanities scholars to enhance their understanding on digital humanities methodologies. The Digging Into Data Challenge seeks for a new research method to use big data that has been established through diverse digitalization projects, and the NEH/DFG Bilateral Digital Humanities Program displays exemplary international cooperation models for humanities research.

The most fundamental implications of the NEH’s Digital Humanities Project are as follows: First, the main actors of the researches should be humanities scholars whose academic bases are on the traditional humanities disciplines. Second, a certain kind of training programs are required to transform these scholars into “digital humanities scholars,” since they are not familiar with the methodology related to information & communication technologies. For this reason, the development and operation of such training programs are recognized as important projects and properly supported during the initial phases for promoting digital humanities.

In Korea, along with digital humanities, “cultural content” studies have been emerged as a result of methodological convergence between humanities and information & communication technologies. Cultural content studies in Korea succeeded in achieving positive outcomes in terms of industrial application of humanities studies. However, unlike the United States, this approaches turned out to be insufficient for providing solid foundation for humanities studies and innovating relevant research methodologies. It is expected that Korean humanities researchers will discover a mutual, complementary progress both for the traditional humanities disciplines and the applied humanities contributing to creative industries through a comprehensive understanding and analysis on the current research trends of digital humanities of the world.
